PADI Open Water Diver
Why PADI
Open Water Diver?
The PADI Open Water Diver
certification is the world's
most widely recognised scuba
diving qualification. Open Water
Divers are able to dive,
unsupervised, with a suitably
qualified buddy almost anywhere
in the world.
What do I need to start?
As long as you are at least
10 years of age, or older, and
can swim for 200 metres, in a
swimming pool, without stopping,
then you can become an Open
Water Diver. Apart from that,
all you need are your own mask,
fins (with boots if appropriate)
and snorkel which we can help
you choose from the wide
selection available in the Dive
Centre.
How long does it take?
The course is divided into
three parts, theory, confined
water dives and open water
dives although the theory and
confined water dives are
completed together so each
reinforces the other. The theory is mostly
studied in your own time using PADI's award winning educational
materials (don't worry -
"theory" might sound daunting
but it's really quite straight
forward.) Your instructor will
check that you have understood
all the material by checking the
Knowledge Reviews, which you
will complete at the end of each
chapter in your student guide
and you will complete one
multiple choice quiz on each
section before completing the
final (multiple choice)
examination. You will complete
two theory sessions on your
course with Ocean Turtle. The
first will cover the first three
modules from the student guide
and normally takes about three
hours on a Saturday morning. Then,
on the following two Thursday
evenings, you will be in the pool to complete
the first two confined water
dives with your instructor.
The following Saturday it's back
to the classroom, in the
dive
centre ,to complete your
knowledge development and to sit
the final examination before you
return to the
pool for two more Thursday
evening sessions ,where you will
complete the final three
confined water dives.
Normally the four Open Water
dives, needed to complete your
certification, will be conducted
at
Wraysbury and
Vobster Quay on the
Saturday and Sunday following
the final confined water
session.
